International objectives

In 2010, KPN affiliated itself to the Global Compact, the United Nations sustainability platform. This enables us to make a contribution to the UN’s international Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. We’ve signed the ten principles of the Global Compact, which commits us to respecting human rights, providing good working conditions, protecting the environment and combating corruption. In addition, KPN holds itself and its suppliers to the standards of the International Labor Organization (ILO), the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.

Curbing energy consumption

Technology offers challenges and opportunities for sustainability. Together with ICT companies across the world, KPN is working to curb energy consumption by mobilizing technological innovation for sustainable solutions. For example, KPN is a member of ITU, the United Nations agency that deals with ICT.

At a European level, telecom companies such as KPN have combined forces in ETNO. One of the themes that this organization focuses on is reducing the impact that telecom providers have on our environment.

In the Netherlands, KPN is a member of the NLconnect trade association, which strengthens and connects the chain of companies in the telecom, broadband and fiber optic industries. NLconnect promotes innovation, good market functioning, mutual cooperation and knowledge exchange in this sector and promotes the shared interests of the members with stakeholders.

Accessibility

Intelligent traffic signals, apps for avoiding congestion, autonomous vehicles and flexible remote working. KPN’s networks and technology are helping to save energy and fuel every single day.

In the Netherlands, we’re a member of the Taskforce Mobiliteitsmanagement (Mobility Management Taskforce). This way, we’re actively participating in the corresponding Beter Benutten (Better Utilities) platform. This is a collaboration between the government, knowledge institutions, large companies and start-ups to improve the accessibility of the Netherlands with innovative measures.

We’re also contributing to this theme internationally, including via Connekt: an independent network of more than 200 influential parties that are seeking tangible solutions for smart, sustainable and social mobility.

Responsible procurement

By working together with suppliers, industry peers and large organizations, we can encourage others to work more sustainably. With this we want to show suppliers that good social and environmental sustainability are important requirements during the purchasing process. Read the requirements imposed on suppliers here.

KPN is a member of the Joint Alliance for CSR (JAC). This is a collaboration of telecom companies worldwide with the aim of auditing the production locations of important ICT suppliers. With these checks, the telecom companies ensure that all major players in the chain are committed to socially responsible entrepreneurship. JAC audits major suppliers in high-risk areas such as Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America.
