Fiber on, copper off

Future proof internet

The Netherlands is digitizing at a rapid pace. We shop online, game in the attic, work from home more often and increasingly arrange things digitally. Secure, reliable and fast internet is therefore becoming increasingly important. KPN’s mission is to make the Netherlands the world’s best-connected country. And we’re doing this by making high-quality and stable internet available to everyone in the Netherlands.

Future proof internet

KPN is also investing in fiber to ensure that the Netherlands remains at the digital forefront in the future. This new technology, specially designed for the internet, is ready to meet all our data needs. Fiber is the future and offers greater stability, reliability and even higher speeds. This way, we’re ready for the future.

How do we do that?

We are connecting more addresses to fiber optics every day. In these locations, the copper line will eventually become obsolete. We aim to have provided 80% of households with fiber optics by 2026, and we will continue the rollout beyond that date. The copper line is only deactivated once the new fiber connection is active—never before. This ensures no one is left without internet unexpectedly and eliminates the need to maintain two separate networks simultaneously.Whether fiber or copper, our customers are well-served with KPN internet. Thanks to these networks, we secured the top two spots in the *Consumentenbond* (Dutch Consumers' Association) "All-in-One" provider test in January 2023. By installing fiber optics, we are future-proofing our network. Fiber offers greater stability and reliability, as well as the option for higher speeds. In areas where KPN operates two networks, almost everyone has already switched away from copper. If fiber is available to customers but they haven't made the switch yet, we assist them in doing so. If KPN fiber isn't available in the area yet, our trusted network remains in use until we install fiber there as well. We have notified all internet providers that use KPN’s fixed network at least three years in advance, giving them ample time to carefully guide their customers through the transition to fiber.
