Mobile internet increases more
than threefold
The mobile data traffic handled by KPN in 2007 has grown more than threefold in a year. The number of data bundles increases rapidly following the introduction of flat fee bundles. Mobile data is expected to represent a significant source of sales growth.
The revenue from mobile data in the consumer market is still limited, but taking current developments into consideration it is expected to become a significant share in 2010. One of the things likely to stimulate this is the forthcoming introduction of mobile television via DVB-H in mid-2008. Mobile television via UMTS pilots held in second half of 2007 were successful and announcements to market a series of cell phones supporting DVB-H technology are made at the beginning of 2008. By the time of the launch coverage is expected to be national.
Convenience and benefits
To familiarize customers with the convenience and benefits of internet via their cell phone, December 2007 is declared "discover internet on your cell phone" month. From December 21 through 30 mobile customers get free internet access with their GSM. This is KPN's response to the fact that mobile applications such as news, e-mail, Hyves and movie clips on YouTube are beginning to play an increasingly important role in everyday life. Watching TV on a cell phone is also becoming more and more popular. Increasing numbers of people are watching newscasts and soccer matches on their cell phone.
Corporate growth
Despite cuts in MTA and roaming rates imposed by the government, mobile services in the corporate market are growing, especially data services such as data cards for laptops, BlackBerry and M2M. Here too, further sales growth is expected thanks to the KPN's high quality 3G network based on HSDPA 3.6. The KPN network offers greater bandwidths and a wider area coverage than that of the competition.
