KPN rolls out more and more fiber optic networks
KPN's roll-out of fiber optic networks assumes larger proportions in 2007. The consumer trials of the Glasnet fiber optic network in Enschede attract a great deal of interest and fiber optic networks are installed in business parks throughout the country.
In 2007 KPN installs high-speed broadband connections for companies in many places including Alkmaar, Heerhugowaard, Wormer and Wormerveer, Alphen aan den Rijn, Mijdrecht, the Moerdijk port and industrial park, Waddinxveen, the greenhouse farming location in Wieringermeer, Almere, Emmen and Oosterhout.
Fiber optic networks give those companies a future-proof infrastructure that suitable for online applications requiring a lot of bandwidth, such as video and applications heavy on data transmission. The reliability and great bandwidth of fiber optics makes the technique especially suitable for remote surveillance camera systems. As a KPN fiber optics network is based on an "open infrastructure", companies can use the services and applications of all providers on this network.
Fiber optic network for consumers
Enschede is the first city in the Netherlands where KPN installs a fiber optic network for consumers. This fiber optic network has been facilitated by intense cooperation between the municipality of Enschede a group of housing corporations, (the Domijn, De Woonplaats and Ons Huis) and KPN Glasnet. The Glasnet trial in Enschede-Zuid ends in September and as from October 22 residents can register for the opening offer. Thousands of people take advantage of it.
The registration period, which is originally scheduled to close on 23 November, is extended for the residents of the Helmerhoek and Wesselerbrink districts because of the enormous interest shown and the opening offer from the associated service providers (Introweb, KPN, Solcon and Unet) continues until December 31, 2007. Residents of the Stroinkslanden district can register from 2008. Other districts of Enschede will have the opportunity to register in the course of that year.
New services
Fiber optics present opportunities for new developments and so open the way for new services, such as a digital consultation with a family doctor or the opportunity for sick children to attend classes from their bed via computer or television. In September KPN receives the GTB Innovation Award in London for the innovative power of its fiber optic networks.
