Keeping the Netherlands on the Move

Social issue: mobility in the Netherlands

KPN’s contribution:
Stimulating teleworking and use of public transport by our own employees
Our ambition is to be at the front of the debate in society about mobility, among other things by participating in government pilot projects that promote flexible working hours.

What’s it about?
Mobility is under pressure in the Netherlands. Neither the economy nor the environment benefits from major traffic congestion caused by millions of Dutch people trying to reach their place of work. KPN is ideally placed to offer products, ideas and services that give people the scope they need to restore the balance between their private and working lives. We can help them use their time more flexibly by teleworking and avoiding the rush hour. As an employer, KPN facilitates working from home and teleworking among its workforce. We are also committed to stimulating the debate in society about mobility and ways to play a leading role in it.

How do we help?
We encourage our employees to use public transport, for example by providing a higher allowance for commuting by public transport than for traveling by car. All our 2,500 company car drivers additionally received a Netherlands Railways Business Card in 2007 and a ConferenceCard for teleconferencing.

We are facilitating working at alternating hours and places through ICT services like ConferenceCards, mobile Internet cards, Blackberry devices and laptops. Roughly one quarter of our employees now work ‘remotely’ using a laptop, ADSL and mobile telecommunication. It’s exactly what we do for our customers as well. KPN is facilitating teleworking by introducing services like software online, mobile Internet, teleconferencing and videoconferencing.
