Radio Frequency Identification
Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders.
An RFID tag can be applied to or incorporated into a product, animal, or person for the purpose of identification using radio waves. F.i. in your cellphone or in your arm, or in a book, a company card, a hospital bracelet, or on fresh vegetables in a crate. Some tags can be read from several meters away and beyond the line of sight of the reader. As a ICT service provider KPN facilitates companies that want to use RFID in their business processes. New applications are tested. Read more on RIFD, recent pilots and experiences. KPN is one of the companies that set up the RFID Platform Nederland.
The small chip is easy to incorporate into packaging, virtually ruling out damage. RFID data can be linked into existing information systems. The RFID chip is expected to replace the barcode within a few years from now.

Measuring success
Imagine having a real-time insight into the status of your systems, stocks or other measurable quantities, anytime, anywhere. Smart Metering, or remote measurement, is increasingly being used to measure consumption and optimise the control of logistical processes. Thanks to telemetry, companies can reduce their costs and work more efficiently, because staff no longer physically have to go to a location to perform a measurement.
The usage possibilities are enormous and KPN is there to facilitate the underlying communication technology and advise you. Together with various partners, KPN has already implemented numerous telemetry projects, including:
- Measurement of gas, electricity and water consumption
- Measurement of liquid levels in petrol tanks
- Measure of stock levels and temperatures of beer systems
- Reading out of parking meters and vending machines.
