Care for the environment is an integral part of KPN’s business operations. KPN places particular focus on responsible energy use, because the telecommunication and ICT sector consumes a lot of energy. ICT can help to reduce its customers’ energy consumption too. We aim to continuously improve our environmental performance and to set an example in the sector, as well as to comply with relevant legislation and regulations. In addition, KPN is dedicated to reduction of waste, proper management of cables and other issues that contribute towards a better environment.
In the Netherlands and Germany, KPN has a certified environmental management system (ISO14001). This international standard is used to develop environmental policy, to manage environmental aspects and to improve the environmental performance of an organization. The ISO certificate shows that we take environmental policy seriously. More and more customers ask us about this. The certificate fits in with our policy for corporate social responsibility because it makes a demonstrable contribution to both business and social goals. The manager of the KPN Energy Management Group is responsible for introducing, maintaining and reporting the performance of the environmental management system. In order to put KPN’s environmental policy into practice, periodic targets are set and actions are determined with a view to reaching the targets.
KPN is affiliated to the “Stichting ICT-Milieu”, the trade association which ensures on behalf of Dutch ICT companies that used equipment is collected and reused. KPN works closely with companies that specialize in responsible removal and recycling of ICT waste. KPN also collects used mobile phones. If they can be reused, they are redeployed, otherwise KPN disposes of them.
