Energy saving At KPN

The sharp increase in data communication means that we consume more energy. If we do not take any action, by 2015 our own energy consumption will increase by around 20 per cent in comparison with 2010. KPN has therefore set up a comprehensive program for those parts of the company that consume the most energy: our networks in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, our data centers and our vehicle fleet. Together they account for 81 per cent of the energy consumption of the KPN Group.

We expect the planned savings to ensure in the coming years that our electricity consumption in 2013 is no more than 5 per cent higher than in 2010. Our network needs to expand in order to facilitate the sharp growth in mobile and fixed internet traffic and in interactive TV. Nevertheless, in 2011 we saved 40 GWh – equivalent to the energy consumption of 11,000 households – by replacing old equipment with new, more energy-efficient devices.
