MSN® Messenger debuts on i-mode™ devices

Den Haag, 15-9-05

Today, MSN and KPN will launch the availability of MSN Messenger on i-mode devices, allowing customers to stay in touch with their friends and family even when they are on the move. MSN Messenger on i-mode extends the benefits and features of MSN Messenger available via PC, which includes having access to an entire MSN Messenger contact list with one click of a button, allowing customers to seamlessly connect with friends that are online.

MSN and i-mode are working together to enhance messaging between mobile phones and PCs to deliver a richer experience to customers. The new service will bring together customers of MSN Messenger, the world’s largest instant messaging service with more than 170 million customers worldwide, and i-mode, a leading mobile data service with more than 50 million customers worldwide, as messaging continues to grow in popularity on PCs and mobile phones.

Building on and complementing the messaging success of SMS, instant messaging between PCs and mobile phones enables service benefits to customers such as immediacy, the ability to tell whether a contact is available to receive a message and the ability to see the text of whole conversations. By adding the service functionality of IM and by connecting MSN and i-mode customers, both companies expect more frequent interaction between PC and mobile customers, resulting in increased traffic.

Marcel Timmerhuis, Manager for Mobile Consumer Marketing at KPN: “ i-mode is excited to partner with MSN to deliver instant messaging to customers, allowing customers to stay connected on the go: when you use i-mode, you have access to all your friends literally in your pocket. Anytime. i-mode is committed to building a seamless link between the internet and mobile devices.”

Joost Bon, Communication Services Lead at MSN the Netherlands: “MSN Messenger is a real sensation in the Netherlands with more than 4,5 million users and we are delighted that it is now available for the first time to i-mode users. This launch is a great example of how MSN does its utmost to make its services accessible by users whenever and wherever”

Access to MSN Messenger, the world’s most popular instant messaging service, will be available to i-mode subscribers for €2.50 per month, in addition to their i-mode payment plan.
