KPN has been selected by the public German research network association DFN as one of their long-term suppliers for the implementation of the new scientific X-Win network. KPN is providing DFN with 2,200 km of fibre optic cable routes as part of one of the most efficient networks worldwide. The DFN scientific network is being used by more than 500 universities and research facilities in Germany and is connected to the European network GÉANT2.
The DFN association requires a network to enable their scientific members maximum flexibility and efficiency for exchanging data information. To accommodate these needs, they initiated a European wide tender in which KPN was awarded with substantial parts of the new fibre network called X-WiN. By using this network, DFN benefits from large bandwidths of up to 10 Gbit/s and short-term upscale options. At the same time the network marks a new era in terms of DFN network infrastructure.
More than 2.5 million students, teachers and staff at German universities and research facilities daily use the DFN network, on a national scale as well as for interaction with the international science community. The extensive KPN network coverage provides therefore an ideal basis for DFN users to access scientific information and for network based projects in the field of computer-aided medicine, climate forecasts or radio astronomy.
Commenting on this significant customer win, John van Vianen, Senior Vice President Connectivity Services at KPN, stated: "We are proud that DFN has chosen KPN as one of their suppliers in Germany. This was based on our success in meeting their wide scope of decision criteria in the tender phase and our good cooperation in the subsequent network implementation. This project is a further evidence of KPN’s flexibility in elaborating and installing customer specific network solutions.”
