From the start of August 2007, KPN is cutting the price of its television products. Digitenne will cost subscribers only €6.95 a month instead of €9.95 – a full 30% less. Interactive TV (formerly known as Mine TV) will be cheaper, too. The basic package of some 50 TV and 75 radio channels will cost €9,95. Customers will also be able to choose premium packages with extra channels. By offering customers more choice and lower prices, KPN intends to contest the current cable TV monopoly and strengthen its position in the Dutch television market.
A new, lower price point of €6.95 makes Digitenne more than ever the affordable alternative to cable TV in the Netherlands from August 2nd. For half the price of an analogue cable subscription, Digitenne provides a basic package containing the 23 most popular TV channels plus 19 radio stations in digital quality. Digitenne’s more than 300,000 current subscribers will automatically profit from the lower fees as of September. A further new feature is that Digitenne customers will be able to rent the digital tuners they need. The first tuner is included in the subscription price, additional tuners will cost subscribers € 3 a month.
The great advantage of Digitenne is that it is wireless, so you can watch TV anywhere, whether at home or outdoors, and very easy to connect. Today saw the Netherlands’ newest Digitenne transmitter taken into service in Den Bosch, meaning that more than 65% of Dutch households can now watch Digitenne’s full range of programming. Further transmitters in Arnhem, Eindhoven, Enschede and Doetinchem will follow before the end of the year, adding another half million households to the coverage area.
Interactive TV will be rolled-out on a broader scale following initial introduction last year. The new, descriptive name is a better fit for KPN’s other brands. TV is a strategic business line for KPN, alongside telephone and internet. Customers increasingly favor one-stop shopping for these products, to save money, but also for the sake of convenience.
Also new is that Interactive TV customers will be able to choose from a variety of packages, starting with a basic package of €9.95 a month for some 50 TV and 75 channels. Further premium packages included extra themed channels including sport, music and documentaries, a football and an adult package. The individual premium packages also cost €9,95 per month on top of the basic fee.
Besides digital audio and video, Interactive TV offers customers extras such as video on demand features including ‘Missed Programme’ and Film Direct, the living room video store offering hundreds of titles. The set-top box featuring a built-in hard disc, currently on offer at the reduced price of €99,95, allows customers to record up to 100 hours of TV at the touch of a button.
