KPN, KLM and Schiphol Group have signed a new six-year contract for mobile radio telephone communication in and around Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Undisturbed, round-the-clock communication is vital to all the processes going on at both KLM and Schiphol Group. The contract covers the management and use of over 3,000 walkie talkies and the ICT systems they are connected to.
For KLM, mobile radio telephone communication is key to efficient aircraft and flight handling. Digitization and data and mobile communication are becoming increasingly important to KLM’s business processes, and its mobile radio telephone services need to keep up. Guaranteed availability, robust peripheral equipment, data communications capability and the ability to set up function- or flight-specific communication were the main specifications that KLM set for KPN’s new digital service. Some 8,000 KLM employees will be using the new walkie talkies, 1,550 in all.
With 1,000 walkie talkies, Schiphol Group will be the second largest user of the new TETRA network. The new equipment will be used by the operational departments in the terminal and the landing area. According to Schiphol management, the new communication system is not only a quantum leap in terms of technology, but also reflects the company’s good cooperation with KLM, the airport’s leading airline. Management sees the new system as a good example of how ICT innovation can be used to significantly improve flight handling, security and emergency response. Other parties involved in flight handling are bound to benefit as well.
TETRA
The new walkie talkies will be connected to the new digital TETRA network, which will replace the analog TRAXYS network that KPN has been operating at the airport to date. For all the users, it is crucial that the transition is seamless and all business processes can continue uninterrupted in the meantime.
By using state-of-the-art technology, KPN guarantees ultra-high uptime at lower cost.
