Den Haag, 25-8-08
KPN, in conjunction with Samsung and Logica, has started a trial for quick and efficient parking with the aid of mobile phones. Drivers will be able to gain access to KPN’s company car park in The Hague without needing a parking pass or access code. This will enable the number of available parking spaces to be used to the full. The trial will use Samsung mobile phones containing what is known as Near Field Communication software (NFC) by Logica. KPN is the first European ICT and telecom provider to put this application to the test.
A number of KPN employees have been equipped with mobile phones containing NFC technology for the duration of the trial, which will last several months. The parking information currently contained on employees’ individual company cards is integrated into the mobile phones. A parking pass or access code is no longer required. In addition to identifying and authorising employees and visitors, each ingoing or outgoing car is registered. This means that the exact number of available parking spaces is known at any time. The mobile parking system will put an end to the structural shortage of parking spaces for employees. KPN will add to the number of NFC chip applications during the fourth quarter of 2008.
Real time information
‘At large car parks, you notice that the parking system takes no account of spaces that have suddenly become available’, Lothar Steegstra, Innovation manager at KPN, explains. ‘For example, the company garage is regularly fully booked, while in reality only 7 out of 10 parking spaces are occupied. This is due to employees working elsewhere or visitors cancelling appointments. The new system monitors in real time the number of available parking spaces. This increases efficiency considerably.’
