KPN expands global WiFi roaming with 30,000 hotspots from WeRoam

Den Haag, 20-3-07

KPN has significantly expanded its WiFi hotspot roaming network for customers. KPN HotSpots and WeRoam (Comfone AG) have signed an agreement to incorporate almost 30,000 WiFi hotspots from the WeRoam global virtual broadband network into KPN’s existing international HotSpot network. In turn, WeRoam will have access to KPN’s network of more than 700 hotspots throughout The Netherlands. The agreement enables KPN’s mobile customers and KPN HotSpot subscribers to access their email, corporate networks and the internet from an increased number of WiFi locations. These WeRoam hotspot locations will be complementary to the 30.000 locations worldwide already available to KPN’s customers. KPN aims to offer customers the best available connection to the people and information that are important to them, no matter where they are.

KPN has developed free Dashboard software for laptops to make using the mobile internet as easy and transparent as possible and give customers complete cost control. The more than 29,000 new WeRoam locations will automatically be added to this client software. An on-screen KPN logo gives an easy visual indication that WeRoam locations are accessible for KPN customers. WiFi hotspot usage is particularly straightforward for KPN’s mobile subscribers; wherever they are in the world, hotspot usage is conveniently billed via the standard monthly invoice. Users can enjoy WiFi connectivity without the rigmarole of using a credit card, and financial departments have a complete overview of usage and costs.

KPN Board Member Eelco Blok: “This significant expansion of our Wifi coverage allows us at KPN to offer our customers broadband internet access from even more locations around the world. Using WiFi abroad often works out to be more advantageous for customers than using a local mobile network. Besides the fact that mobile internet abroad isn’t always as fast as in The Netherlands, WiFi also ensures that the costs are predictable and controllable.”

Susanne Peters, International Sales Director for WeRoam at Comfone: “KPN is an important partner for WeRoam as their hotspot network covers some of the most visited locations in The Netherlands. Access to highly frequented locations such as the international Schiphol Airport Amsterdam is exactly what our customers at AT&T and BT Openzone expect from a leading public WLAN roaming aggregator like WeRoam. We look forward to a long term and mutually beneficial partnership with KPN.”
